37.29 – Hectosity

Yes, hectosity.  Sounds like: heck-toss-it-ee.  Definition: a state of your day being so hectic that at 5pm you are curious where the heck the day went.

Today. Was.  Hectosity.

Before I get to that, though, I wanted to show you this website.  Fly.

I’ve been at my job for just under two months now and the best way I can describe it is information overload.  There are about ten systems upon which I have had crash courses.  It’s challenging though, and I like that.  In the last week or so, we’ve been chatting about certain systems that we want to put in place, one of which I get to lead.  Today was something along the lines of……BOMBARDMENT!  But oh how sweet it was.

I actually needed a few more hours in the work day today and would have gladly worked them.  Most of the day was spent in meetings.  First, a ‘heads up’ type meeting that we’re going to get crushed on Monday.  Next, chatting with a vendor and a co-worker about what will henceforth be known as “TheProject”.  I foresee a lot of meetings with a lot of people to get this the way everyone wants it.  TheProject is officially now my baby.  When I came back from lunch, there was a huge (and when I say huge, I mean more than 4’x5′) relational diagram draped over my monitor, keyboard, and chair.  TheProject is going to be so much fun.  Last, a web demo/conference with the earlier vendor, the vendor doing the demo, a couple co-workers, and the director of our department.  I was all kinds of sitting quietly and listening until I had a good question.  Boom!  I unleashed that bad boy and got kudos from the earlier vendor and the director.  That meeting was full of win.

I’m actually enjoying my job.  Who’da thunk it?

Also, whilst my goal is to blog daily, I just don’t think I’m going to make it tomorrow.  We have a social event directly after work that will run past midnight.  I suppose that one day won’t be the end of the world.

Well now, I think I’ve talked your ear off enough for tonight.  Have a great Friday!  Go to happy hour or something but always have a designated driver.  Be safe!  See you on Saturday.

Job Rollercoaster….of love…say what?

One of the scariest things about moving to another state is the concept of not having a job and worrying about not being able to get one.  I know that I’m fairly marketable with my jill-of-all -trades, master of none resume but the worry was there nonetheless.  Being jobless for pretty much any period of time wasn’t really an option for me since I had exhausted most of my savings, so when a temp agency called me, I jumped in it. *DirecTv commercial voice*

No doubt, I didn’t enjoy the temp position.  It was okay at first, or until the first time I got screamed on by an irate customer.  I took it too personally, I took it home, I didn’t sleep.  After that day, I knew that I couldn’t stay in that position.  It was only a temp position regardless, but the sooner I could leave it, the better.

I read the classified ads like they were my last gasp of oxygen.  I sent out more resumes in two months than I had probably sent out in four years.  I was starting to get antsy.  I wanted out and my contract was going to end regardless. By a stroke of luck, I got a call for a phone interview for a position that was really interesting at company A.  That interview went well.  Shortly thereafter, I got a call to interview for company B.  Funny thing, company A and company B were in the same building, both about 10 minutes from home.  I was led to believe some things about company B that made it appear to be a good deal.

I accepted the position at company B, only to find out, after two days, that the things I was led to believe were not true. In the meantime, I had gotten a call to interview at company C.  Due to circumstances at company B that were beyond my control, I decided that I would go ahead and interview at company C (5 minutes from home).   Whilst I was interviewing at company C, I received TWO e-mails requesting phone interviews for companies D and E.  Apparently, in Colorado, when it snows, it’s a blizzard.  It seems that we live in a really central location because company D is 10 minutes from home and company E is about 7.

Within two hours of interviewing at company C, I had received an offer.  I knew it was in my best interest to go there so I told company E that I was no longer available but I still spoke with company D.  Turns out that company D was about equal in pay to company C but in less of an IT role.  Company D was very truthful with me and I like that.  They also said if my situation changed to get back in touch with them.  I like that a lot.

So, let’s do some math.

Company A = $x/hour

Company B = $x+2/hour

Company C =  $x+6/hour

Yep, I think things worked out well.  If I read my interview at company C correctly, they promote from within and they want to see me do well and move up fairly quickly.  Maybe I’ll tell you in a couple months what company C is, but for now, let’s say I’d put money on you having something made from their company in your home right now.

I start on Monday.  I’ll let you know how it goes. 🙂

Saturday (Oooh Oooh!)

With a proper shout out to Double S!  Let's go back to the zoo!

And of course, I couldn't use that title without the appropriate props to Mr. Bridges with his fine ass self.

If this weekend had only had one day, Saturday really would have been the one that was enough to fill up the whole weekend for me. 🙂

Sit back and enjoy the recap.

  • We got up a little on the late side and skipped our usual weekend breakfast of Sergio's because we had some coupons for Burger King.  Yeah, they're on my shit list now too.  First, don't put the lady that doesn't speak English on drive thru, please.  Whatever if you haven't learned English yet.  Good on ya for getting a job, but not one where I need to order food and I prefer to do it in ENGLISH!  Second, please give me the food that I ordered.  If I ask for two orders of cheesey tots, I want two orders.  And three coffees.  Yes, I paid for three, here's my receipt.  Grrrr.  Oh, and if it isn't too much trouble, how about you put the lids on the coffee cups so that a medium coffee doesn't decide to empty itself on the floor of the passenger side of my car.  Thanks!  (Thank goodness for Scotchgard or whatever the heck is on both my mats and carpet because that coffee came out like it never even happened!  Woot!)
  • It gets better and not in a sarcastic way.
  • Lovey and I scored some tickets to go see UM (Hurricanes) play BC (Eagles) at the Bank United Center.  It's probably 15 minutes by car but it was super nice out so we decided to ride our bikes over.  It took about 35 minutes to get there but then we didn't have to deal with traffic or pay for parking so double bonus.  Triple bonus was that our seats were right behind the players' "bench" (it was a bunch of folding chairs).  I'm not a huge basketball fan, but it was a great game.  UM won.  And I got a kiss, or that's what I thought it was when his beak engulfed my head, from Sebastian because as everyone was mobbing the poor guy for photos, I saw his Gatorade cup was empty and offered to get him another.  Being a mascot is tough.  Been there, done that.
  • We had a leisurely bike ride back to the house.  Now my bum is sore from my bike seat.  The horror!
  • This may get confusing in a moment….
  • Lovey's BFF, JP, is starting a business with some people that he works with/used to work with.  I don't know both of the guys, but I did meet JM previously as he is also a Steelers fan and is from the Pittsburgh area.  I am going to do a little website stuff for JP's business (Lord grant me the strength!).  In the meantime, JM knows of someone back home that has a website but wants something better.  JM and JP mention that they know someone that might be able to help them out (yours truly) and to give them the link to their site and some others that they like.  No problem.
  • JP stopped by on Saturday to discuss the look and feel for their site and at that time, forwarded me the email with the other place's info.  My jaw fell.  I opened the link to be sure and sure enough, I know the people from back home that need the website.  I've bought car parts from them.  BruddaShyner used to WORK there!  So of course, I have to text BruddaShyner to ask him if he knows JM.  He texts me back saying that he does and JM is in Miami now.  HA!  BruddaShyner not only knows JM, but he also knows JM's dad.  Funny how I have to move a thousand miles away to do a website for people who were five miles away from the house where I grew up.
  • The world is soooooo small.

I have just under 5 tons of work to do now.  I'm not overwhelmed but I really do have to get organized.  And motivated.

Feel free to kick me in the ass if you see me dilly-dallying.

Heard at work

Particularly particular end user comes to our area and asks questions to my co-worker:

PPEU: I need this, that and the other thing.

CW: Okay.

PPEU: Can you go down too?

HAHAHAHAHAHA, I'm a mess.

The Thursday that is Friday

And why is that?  Because I'm taking the day off tomorrow.  You know why?  Cuz I can.  It's our pseudo-celebration of finishing this friggin Associates degree.  And now that I've had a week off, I really must jump back into studying.  Even my horoscope says so!

Money which you may have been working to earn for a long time may finally come your way today, MiamiShyner. Don't be surprised, however, if you have to do a lot of running around in order to get it! Plans for future moneymaking projects may come your way, though it is important to remember to consider everything carefully and not jump in too quickly. This is an excellent time to start learning a new moneymaking skill. Go for it!

First sentence: I have my annual review today.  I technically got promoted about six months ago without the pay raise to go with it.  I'm hoping this means that I'll actually be getting a raise.

Second sentence: I've been running around for the last six months.

Third sentence: I don't know yet.  Maybe something REALLY interesting will come up today. (btw, keep your fingers crossed for good juju at 10:30am EST please)

Last sentence: Go forth and LEARN!  PHP is first, then I think I'll try to tackle some SQL.  If you could see my bookshelf you'd think I'm a computer programming genius, but alas, I am not.  I really gotta get moving on being more proficient in at least one area.

It's self-portrait Thursday, so here's a picture of me because I think I'm cute today.

Me

Have a great day everyone!!
