2011

Where DOES the time go?!?!

This poor, neglected blog.  I’m surprised it even lets me sign in any more.  It probably wouldn’t were it not for Google Chrome being smart.  At times, I don’t post because I just don’t have anything to say or I’m being lazy.  This time, that is not  the case.  I’ve actually been too busy to breathe.  Even as I type this, I’m counting the minutes until I need to leave the house again.  I think the best way to catch up on what’s happened in August is……..bulletpoints!

  • As a member of Imperial Flyers, we put on an awesome amateur circus show.  No one got (seriously) injured and that always makes for a good time.  Threw two tricks, caught two tricks.  That’s a win in my book.  Videos can be seen here.
  • We passed our one year in Colorado/one year in our house milestone.  It isn’t “our house” since it’s a rental, but it’s definitely our house. 🙂
  • I went on a work retreat to Estes Park.  It was really great to get to meet our near-shore development team from Mexico and our developers who are right here in the Denver area.  We had a blast hanging around and talking and playing games.  And drinking.  And talking about the most ridiculous stuff ever.  Have you de-wormed yourself lately?
  • We made an appearance at my company’s picnic, for which I made some awesome pound cake cupcakes.  The cupcakes started the weekend baking binge.  The following weekend I made zucchini bread since one of Lovey’s co-workers had way too much zucchini and squash. It was so, so  yummy.  Lovey took a loaf to work and I got a few requests for my recipe.  Yay me!
  • WORK!  If you’ve followed this blog at all in the previous years or if you have the time/energy to go back through the archives, you’ll know that my work situation in Miami was just to the left of awful.  It was a toxic situation wherein, at one point, I was so stressed out that I was having what I called hobo dinner – a scoop of peanut butter and a beer.  Well.  All that has changed.  My current job is the COMPLETE opposite of where I was.  I enjoy my job.  I get up in the mornings and I’m excited to go to work.  I have piles and piles of things to do.  My intelligence and willingness to help are acknowledged and appreciated.  Oh yeah, and then there’s that fast track I’m on to be the manager of my little group and possibly a couple others.  I’m doing some online classes through work to brush up on my management skills.  I’m learning another of our lines of business.  And just the other day, I found out that I’ll be shooting over from App Support to QA full time for the remainder of the year.  We’re looking at quite possibly the beginning of the year for wheels to start not just turning, but peeling out with posi-traction.  Funny also that my boss lives within a 5 minute walk from my house and her boys go to the school down the street from my house.  It is really great to enjoy my job again.  It’s no Don Pablo’s and it’s no Club Med, but it’s probably as close as I’ll get in “corporate America”.  Also, I get to work from home two days a week.  WIN!
  • POLE!  If you came here through Facebook, you’ve seen my profile picture and you know that I do a little pole dancing.  It’s the closest thing to circus without having a trapeze in the house.  I started in Miami with the lovely Michelle Meier, currently of Iron Flower Fitness.  I have infinite thanks for Michelle, because, had it been any other instructor, other than the equally wonderful Marissa Alma Nick, I doubt that my pole journey would have come this far.  Where Michelle gave me my base, Marissa inspired me to move more gracefully.  Both ladies were just so instrumental, if you’re in Miami, living or just visiting, do yourself a favor and go visit them.  Fast forward a few years past Miami and I’ve found a new place to hone my craft – Boulder Spirals.  Sasha and Melanie just couldn’t be any more supportive, warm, and welcoming.  And let’s not forget wildly intelligent, because they did, after all, select me to work through their Apprentice training.  That’s right, I’m currently making my way towards being able (I think I’ve always been able, I’m just receiving the opportunity) to spread my love for pole dancing, fitness, and giving women an opportunity to step out of their usual box and feel strong, sexy, and empowered.
So, you see, I’ve been quite busy.  You should see my iPhone calendar.  August was crazy.  A dot on more than half of the days.  September is currently only holding 11 dots, but hey, it’s only the first!  If you can believe it, I’m still trying to find time to prepare for a student showcase around mid-month which will be my first public pole performance, get to the boxing gym a little more regularly, and write.  I still have a couple of ideas for books that I need to get on paper…or computer.
This is my stolen time.  The time before I absolutely MUST get up and get ready for work (where I can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and flip-flops and be appropriately dressed) but after the alarm has gone off.  The quiet time.  The only time I have for writing.  But again, I say that I will try to find this time more often.  And perhaps I will since fun stuff is actually going on.  Even now, there is more stuff happening, but, dear reader, there’s only so much I’ll bombard you with in one sitting.  We’re already at a thousand words for this post.  So with that, I will leave you, wishing you a happy September, a happy, long, Labor Day weekend, a working air conditioner if you’re here in CO with me (we’ll be breaking a temperature record today…97 in September), and just lots of fun, love, and happiness.  Go forth and caterpillar climb!

Weekend – Part 2

It isn’t the weekend if I don’t have something om nom nommy to eat.  A couple of weekends ago when our air conditioner died, we stumbled across this great pizza place tucked away, well, right by the 1st Bank Center.  You would think that wouldn’t make it tucked away, but it does in its own oddly cool little way.

Protos is just yum.  With their outside seating with great sunset views, their funky interior and a bar that sports a garage door-type opening that allows service to the outside, Protos has become our favorite, albeit expensive, pizza place.  (No, wait, maybe not.  2 alcoholic beverages, an appetizer, what equates to 2 entrees, and then 2 desserts….I guess what we paid was reasonable.)

We started out with some sangria.  They aren’t stingy with the wine in that.  Love the little apple chunks in there that provide a little extra tartness after gulping down all of the sangria.  We split a tomato and mozzarella salad.  I’m not 100% sure but I think they make their own cheese there and my goodness is it tasty.  They give it just a slight sprinkle of sea salt and when you get that one mouthful with the balsamic, the cheese, the tomato and that little taste of salt……heaven!

And then there was the pizza.  This was our second time at Protos.  The first time we got one medium pizza.  This time we opted for two smalls.  It’s literally so delicious that we could eat two mediums, but then we wouldn’t have room for dessert.  The pies: one hula, one white to which we added bacon, spinach, and artichoke hearts.  The hula is their Hawaiian.  It’s fantastic.  The pineapples are fresh, no canned stuff here.  The sliced ham seems more like Canadian bacon and it’s the perfect balance of salt and sweet.

The crust.   Oh, the crust!  It’s thin and crunchy and just so damn tasty.   I like to keep my salad plate with the leftover balsamic vinegar to dip my crust in.  It’s so good it could be an appetizer.  Please, Protos?  Brush a small crust with some of that garlic-infused olive oil and bake it up.  Serve it with a side of balsamic and olive oil.  I’ll buy it; I promise.

Now that there isn’t a crumb left on a plate, it’s time for something sweet.  Not just one something sweet, but one each.  Splurge!  We knew from the last visit that the cannoli would be a win.  The outside is crunchy and flaky and not the least bit soggy anywhere.  The inside?  Ohhhh, my.  A few chocolate chips sprinkled on each end and just oozing with the yummiest, creamiest, sweetest but not overly sweet, just kissed with lemon ricotta you’ll ever taste.  Total mouthgasm.

Since we were splurging, we also had a chocolate tartuffo.  Neither of us had ever heard of this, but of course it didn’t stop us from trying it and thank goodness that we’re adventurous because man, was it good.  Picture a small ball of vanilla gelato with some delicious but unknown flavor just giving your tastebuds butterfly kisses.  Now, wrap that in a wonderful chocolate gelato.  Roll that in a chocolate powder (that really tastes like Nestle Quik) with crushed hazelnuts.  Sit that on a plate drizzled with a bit of chocolate syrup.  WOW!  And honestly, I’m not a huge fan of chocolate, but this was just the right amount and it wasn’t super sweet which I think is what made it more tolerable.

All in all, a great dinner in a great little spot to which I’m sure we’ll return.

In a much less wordy piece of food information, Silk Vanilla Almond milk with Special K Cinnamon Pecan cereal is the shiz-nit.

Weekend – In 2 parts

While, yes, the weekend technically consists of Saturday and Sunday, my weekend really only consists of Saturday being active and Sunday recovering from any Saturday madness.  Such is the case with this weekend.

Sidebar: Wait, before I continue on, does really enjoying Jeremiah Weed tea/lemonade make me a hick?  I think that’s what the commercials are telling me.  If I keep drinking it I’m gonna grow a beard and a pot belly and perhaps my flannel shirt will fill out with moobs?  That would suck.  I’m not going to stop drinking it.  I’ll let you know what happens.

Saturday morning, I arose early (for at least the fifth week in a row…I need to give myself a break and sleep in one time)

Another sidebar: We were just discussing what to have for dinner. I was thinking I might have a bowl of cereal. Lovey said that a bowl of cereal wasn’t dinner so I said I’d have two bowls of cereal to make it a full meal. This is perfect logic, isn’t it?  Is watching Ricky Bobby making me dumber?

to travel on down to Parker to attend a stretching and flexibility workshop

Sorry, but sidebar: Playgirl is for gay men?  I seriously thought it was for dirty girls like myself.  I’m stunned by this.  I’m cool with sharing though.  Just not Lovey. 🙂

lead by the one and only Michelle Stanek.  2011 USPDF Amateur Champion.  Winner of the PFA’s Pole Drama Competition. Yep, I think she’s qualified.  Let’s start with it’s Sunday evening and I’m MEGA sore from STRETCHING!  But it was oh, so worth it.  We did some serious straddle split and side split stretching.  Then there were the bridges.  Ouch.  I really need to work on that.  I’m encouraged to work more on my stretching as during the workshop I was close to actually getting into the side split.  Close enough that Michelle asked if I had my split and said I’d have it in no time.  *starstruck moment*

It’s likely that I’m extra sore because I pushed too hard, stretched a little too far.  Partner stretching probably isn’t the best idea for me because I’ll just keep relaxing into the stretch and go too far.  Or am I supposed to just keep that stretch going until I reach my goal position and just not be able to walk for a while until I get there?  Decisions, decisions.

Well, while I decide, I also get to decide already made a decision on something else.  Something so exciting and so fun.  But since it isn’t totally official yet, I am not going to say what it is just yet.

And all of this was before noon!!

Blogging from my phone

I think I knew this before, but as my blogging duties grow, I figured I should be able to blog without my laptop. Thanks, WordPress. You rock!

The app isn’t perfect, but it’ll allow me to share way too much with you. Fun!!

Still Alive

Miracle of miracles.

Last week was my first adventure in not being lazy.  It went something like this: boxing on Monday,Wednesday, and Friday, then trapeze on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and throw in some pole on Saturday before trapeze.  Originally, I was planning for more trapeze on Sunday, but my body (and my hubby) said, “Hey, stupid. You really ought to think about resting a day.”  And so I did.

Now we’re into week 2 of no lazyasses allowed.  Hit the gym yesterday in my neverending quest to get down to featherweight.  If I were an Olympic boxer, I’d be totally screwed because of hair and boobs  I’d get stuck in the middleweight division with ladies up to 165 pounds.  Yikes!  As it stands in “regular” boxing, I’m fluctuating between lightweight and super lightweight.  Sounds nice, right?  Yeah, not so much.

Holy smokes, I think I just had an epiphany regarding why I can’t hold that damn straddle whip.  We’ll see if I’m right later this evening if the rain holds off.

The rest of the week remains full of more boxing, more trapeze, and more pole (hopefully in studio but certainly at home).  All this work because I love to perform. I hate to practice sometimes, but I love to perform. I’d do a fight night at the gym, but they want me to sprout a money tree from my rear end for training. Instead, I’ll have a little fun at the circus show and then a little more at a certain student showcase. 🙂

Well, more rambling later. For now, I must go dress to fly.
